Ethan Hawke Coming to the Coolidge for His New Film Blaze

We're very excited to host internationally acclaimed actor/director Ethan Hawke on Friday, September 21 for the premiere of Sundance Selects’ Blaze, Hawke’s newest directorial achievement. The film is based on the life of Blaze Foley, the unsung songwriting legend of the Texas outlaw music movement, and features a stunning lead performance by actor/musician Ben Dickey. Hawke will be in attendance  for an audience Q&A following the evening screening.

Blaze was co-written by Hawke and Sybil Rosen and is based on Rosen’s memoir Living in the Woods in a Tree, an intimate story of her relationship to Blaze Foley through their love affair and short marriage, his budding music career, and ultimate personal struggles. Alia Shawkat co-stars as Foley’s wife. The film, released by IFC Films/Sundance Selects, won Dickey the Special Jury Award for Achievement in Acting at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Blaze opened in Austin, Texas on August 17 with continued Texas openings throughout the month, in advance of its national release in September. The film has garnered widespread critical acclaim and also stars Charlie Sexton, Richard Linklater, Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, and Josh Hamilton.

Ethan Hawke is known for his prolific and daring body of stage and screen work as an actor, writer, and director. He has been nominated for several prestigious awards including four Academy Awards (Training Day, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, Boyhood), and several Independent Spirit Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, film critic awards, and a Golden Globe and Tony Award. Blaze is Hawke’s fourth role as film director, following Seymour: An Introduction (2014), The Hottest State (2006), and Chelsea Walls (2001). He has starred in over 60 films, including the soon-to-be released Juliet, Naked, opening at the Coolidge Corner Theatre on August 31.
