Welcome to the Art House

Body

Welcome to the Art House! With a new school year comes a new crop of cinephiles, and there’s no better time to get acquainted with the films that have shaped art house cinema and the theatre that’s been showing them for decades. Whether you’re arriving in Boston as a seasoned cineaste or have never heard the phrase “French New Wave,” consider this your crash course in the classics.

This September series brings together essential works from around the globe, spanning seven decades, from the quiet heartbreak of Tokyo Story and the revolutionary cool of Breathless, to the kinetic romance of Chungking Express, and the surreal journeys of and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Along the way, you’ll encounter landmark films by Agnès Varda, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Charles Burnett, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and more.

Think of this program as your unofficial syllabus for the semester, with no prerequisites, no exams, and absolutely no need to pretend you’ve already seen everything. Come fill in the most glaring gaps in your Letterboxd, discover a filmmaker, or simply make yourself at home in your new favorite theatre. Welcome to the Art House! Welcome to the Coolidge!
