Pre-film introduction by Charles Haugland, Director of New Work for The Huntington, who will contextualize the film with The Huntington's new production of Jez Butterworth's The Hills of California.

Jez Butterworth's acclaimed play The Hills of California (opening at The Huntington on September 11) explores the dynamics between a talented group of sisters and their ambitious mother. Mother-daughter dynamics are also at the forefront of Mike Nichols's 1990 comedy-drama, based on Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographical novel and starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine.

Postcards from the Edge follows Hollywood actress Suzanne Vale (Streep), who is on a slippery slope as a recovering addict. After a stint at rehab, her film company insists that she move in with her mother (MacLaine), herself once a star and now a champion drinker. Such a set-up is bad news for Suzanne, who has struggled for years to escape her mother’s shadow. Despite their issues, Suzanne begins to see the funny side of her situation, and also realizes that not only do daughters have mothers—mothers do too.

The Hills of California is playing at The Huntington from September 11–October 12, 2025. For additional information and tickets, please visit:  huntingtontheatre.org
