A Reopening Update from the Coolidge

Wednesday, July 8, 2020

Dear Coolidge friends,

Monday, July 6 marked the beginning of Massachusetts Phase 3 Reopening Guidelines, when movie theaters were legally permitted to reopen with limited capacity.

The guidelines outlined by the Commonwealth specify that no more than 25 people at a time can be in an enclosed, indoor theater. This directive translates to the Coolidge, as a nonprofit organization, operating at 7% capacity, posing serious financial consequences, especially given the considerable additional costs of implementing safety measures.

We have confidence in and are grateful for the State's leadership throughout this crisis, but the reality is, we cannot commit to a reopening date at this time.

Our amazing Coolidge community continues to help us through this challenging time. We cannot thank you enough for your messages, donations, participation in online classes and Q&As, virtual screening room rentals, purchases of t-shirts and Curbside Concessions. Revenue from those activities and, more importantly, your added donations, have helped cover ongoing operating expenses, but the gap remains large.

We need you more than ever as we plan for the future of the Coolidge in these ever-changing times.

At the Coolidge, we believe in the power of film to generate understanding and empathy, to educate and inspire, and to build community. We know that the need for community, connection, and conversation will be even greater when we are on the other side of this pandemic.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and help the Coolidge on the path towards reopening.

With your support, the show will go on.

Best wishes,

Your friends at the Coolidge
