Seminar: McCabe & Mrs. Miller

Traditions of movie westerns are both recognizable and turned on their head in Robert Altman’s McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). 

This seminar explores the innovations of New Hollywood films to account for the critical and popular response to this film—and to show it helped solidify a new formula for success in Hollywood for the post-studio era.

Sarah Keller is professor of art and cinema studies at UMass Boston. She co-edited Jean Epstein: Critical Essays and New Translations (Amsterdam University Press, 2012), and her books include Maya Deren: Incomplete Control (Columbia University Press, 2014), Anxious Cinephilia: Pleasure and Peril at the Movies (Columbia University Press, 2020), and Barbara Hammer: Pushing Out of the Frame (Wayne State University Press, 2021).
