This seminar will explore one of Werner Herzog's most mesmerizing early films. 

BU Professor Roy Grundmann will discuss Aguirre's cinematic magic and powerful message in the context of Herzog's career and the themes and styles that made the New German Cinema of the 1970s famous. 

About Roy Grundmann: 

Roy Grundmann is Associate Professor of Film Studies at Boston University. His recent research is on how ships have shaped modernity and postmodernity’s cultural imaginaries about migration, encampment, de/colonization, and tourism. His book On Shoreless Sea: The MS St. Louis Refugee Ship in History, Film, and Popular Memory was published by SUNY Press in October 2025 Grundmann is a Contributing Editor of Cineaste Magazine. He has curated retrospectives on Andy Warhol, Matthias Müller, Michael Haneke, and Werner Schroeter and has extensively published on these artists.
