Following their collaborations on Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and New York, New York, Robert De Niro reteamed with director Martin Scorsese for this unflinching boxing drama. As Jake La Motta, a boxer whose psychological and sexual complexities erupt into violence both in and out of the ring, De Niro won his second Academy Award. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are unforgettable as the brother who falls prey to Jake's mounting paranoia and jealousy, and the fifteen-year-old girl who becomes his most prized trophy. Coolidge Award honoree Thelma Schoonmaker won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for her work on the film as well, and the film received six other nominations including Best Picture.
