School Daze
Spike Lee’s sophomore feature—a musical dramedy that takes an unforgettable look at Black college life—marked the first of many collaborations with legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
Drawing inspiration from her own undergrad experience at Hampton University, an HBCU, Carter designed several t-shirts and scoured sporting goods stores with Lee to create unique looks for the Gamma Phi Gamma pledges.
Amidst gala coronations, football, fraternities, parades and parties, the stars of the film—Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Spike Lee, and Tisha Campbell—find themselves caught up in romance, relationships, and rivalries during one outrageous homecoming weekend. With dynamic music, including EU's hit "Da Butt", and dance numbers choreographed by Otis Sallid (Fame), Lee successfully challenges viewpoints about self-identity and self-esteem in this original, contemporary musical comedy.
