Visible Mysteries: Queer Cinema

Five Mondays, June 16 to July 14, from 6:15pm to 9:15pm

“The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible," Oscar Wilde once wrote, a sentiment particularly relevant to queer identities that may not be readily apparent. 

This class explores how queer filmmakers have used cinema to both negotiate and play with these mysterious perceptions, transparencies, disguises, and manifestations. Over 5 weeks, we’ll enjoy five queer classics on the big screen, with rich discussions before and after to contextualize and understand their importance.

Kyle Stevens is Associate Professor of Film Studies at Appalachian State University. He is the author of a book on Mike Nichols, editor of The Oxford Handbook of Film Theory, and published widely on topics related to queer cinema, performance, humor, social media, and more in venues such as Critical Inquiry, Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, and L.A. Review of Books.
