John Singleton’s landmark 1991 film Boyz n the Hood functions simultaneously as a quintessential coming of age tale, a Black audience cult favorite, an archetype of the “hood film” cycle of the 1990s, and a star vehicle for Black talent who would go on to become major figures in Hollywood in the decades after its release.

This seminar will examine how the film makes Black death on screen matter in ways that few films had either before or since.
