Coolidge Education: Ghosting

Class Dates: five consecutive Tuesdays, from October 1 - October 29

Time: 10am - 1pm

If ghosts didn't exist we'd have to invent them. Whether or not you believe in ghosts–and billions of people do–they are everywhere.

Cultures and religions are rich in them. Ghosts do heavy lifting as metaphors, representing unfinished business: unrequited love, repressed desire, unresolved personal and historical trauma, inconsolable grief, unexpiated guilt, and more. Ghosts are disruptors. They play tricks with time, collapsing the past, present, and future in on each other. Cinema is often said to be a ghostly medium, which makes the Coolidge Corner Theatre a haunted house par excellence.

Through lectures, screenings, and discussions, we'll explore different kinds of ghostly hauntings. Don't expect jump-out-and-scare-you horror films, Hollywood blockbusters, or cult films. Do expect classic and contemporary international films of great beauty and depth that will surprise, delight, challenge, and haunt you.

Long-time Coolidge Instructor Kaj Wilson served as Film Editor of "The Improper Bostonian”, followed by 12 years as Artistic Director of The Boston Jewish Film Festival. Awards include a Special Commendation by the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Image Award for Vision and Excellence by Women in Film and Video/New England.
