Special screening of the new film Fjord followed by Q&A with filmmaker Cristian Mungiu!

Created in 2025, the Coolidge Impact Award celebrates a film artist who demonstrates artistic bravery and persistence of vision, and whose work inspires social change. Our 2026 honoree is the Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, the internationally-acclaimed writer-director and two-time winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

After the screening, Mungiu will participate in a Q&A and be presented with The Coolidge Impact Award.

Fjord opens at the Coolidge on Friday, October 16.

About Fjord

Fjord follows the Gheorghius family: Norwegian mom Lisbet (Academy Award Nominee Renate Reinsve), her devout Romanian husband Mihai (Academy Award Nominee Sebastian Stan), and their five children, who relocate to Lisbet's remote hometown in Norway. The setting is idyllic, but tension builds between the pious Gheorghius family and their more secular neighbors, including the town's head teacher and his own family. With his usual incisive script and clear-eyed direction, Mungiu stress-tests fundamentalist beliefs in either direction and invites audiences to confront their own values.

About Cristian Mungiu

Born in Iași, Romania in 1968, Cristian Mungiu began his career as a journalist and a teacher before enrolling in the Bucharest National Film University. In 2002, his first feature, Occident, had its international premiere at the Quainzaine des Realisateurs in Cannes. In 2007, his second feature 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days won multiple international awards and was recognized as a foundational film in the emerging Romanian New Wave. He has since brought 5 features to festivals and theaters worldwide, and played a key role in Romania’s film industry, founding a production company, a film distributor, and several festivals in his home country. His newest film Fjord was awarded the Palme d’Or at Cannes and has been selected by Romania as its submission for the Best International Feature Film Academy Award®.
