The Host (2006)
Before the film, microbiologist Silvia Caballero (who was recently named one of MIT Technology Review’s Global Innovators Under 35) will discuss antibiotic drug resistance, and new approaches that are being developed to control bacterial infections.
The mutant amphibian at the center of Bong Joon Ho’s action-packed, big-budget creature feature runs similarly unchecked, snatching a young girl from the hands of her family and terrorizing the denizens of Seoul. The creature, spawned by chemical dumping in Han River, proves to be a force to be reckoned with, as the family scrambles to find the girl and defeat the monster, who is rumored to be carrying a mysterious virus.
At the time of its release, The Host became the highest-grossing Korean film of all time, and established Bong Joon Ho (who would go on to direct Snowpiercer and this year’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Parasite) as an international auteur to be reckoned with.
