In the '50s and '60s, director, writer, producer, and master of the macabre William Castle used gimmicks to promote his movies far and wide.

In this seminar with Program Director Mark Anastasio, learn more about Castle's life, work, and legacy.

About Mark Anastasio

A lifelong cinephile, Mark landed in Boston and immediately fell in love with the Coolidge Corner Theatre during a Midnite screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s El Topo. His mind was blown, and he knew then he wanted to be a curator of films. As Program Director, Mark’s many duties at the theatre currently include: overseeing the programming for the Coolidge's various repertory and signature film series', including our famous After Midnite film series and the infamous Halloween Horror Movie Marathon. In 2014 the Boston Society of Film Critics awarded the Coolidge After Midnite a special commendation "for its idiosyncratic programming and remaining dedicated to 35mm exhibition". Boston’s NPR station has said of him, “It’s an understatement to say that Mark Anastasio knows horror movies. This guy knows horror movies the way Ted Williams knew hitting and Stephen Hawking knows physics.” Recently, Mark has worked for the Atlanta Film Festival and the Oak Cliff Film Festival as a narrative features programmer. He has served as a juror for film festivals such as the Independent Film Festival of Boston, Strano Film Festival, and the Boston Underground Film Festival. He has been a featured speaker on the subject of film programming at the Art House Convergence, and has written for numerous film sites and horror zines. You can regularly find him on stage at the Coolidge introducing an astonishing film and hopefully making our audiences feel at home.
